The central south of Sardinia is also known for the largest Nuragic Royal Palace on the island, Su Nuraxi in Barumini. A complex and impressive site that deserves to be visited to learn about fundamental aspects of the Nuragic culture and which was recognized by UNESCO since 1997. The surrounding area has around thirty nuraghi, testimony to the great value of this area starting from the Neolithic period (6000 - 2700 BC), thanks to the discovery of numerous Domus de Janas. But it is during the
Nuragic period that the local populations built the majestic Nuragic palace, testifying to the strategic position and control of the territory that was required here for the large extension of wheat cultivation. Not far away is Casa Zappata, a series of buildings built by the noble Aragonese Zapata family in the 16th century and which in the 1980s was acquired by the municipality of Barumini to create a museum complex suitable for displaying the finds found in the nearby Nuragic royal palace of Su Nuraxi.
During the creation of this project, however, a notable discovery was made: the Zapata buildings had been built on the foundations of the megalithic walls of an imposing nuraghe, which today are visible during the visit of the museum complex thanks to a glass flooring, which reveals the plant. The museum complex today is divided into the section of finds found in the Barumini area, a section dedicated to the history of the ancient Sardinian wind instrument Launeddas and finally the ethnographic section. To end the day you can taste local delicacies in a local farmhouse, or visit a local winery to discover the area.
